Why did Orpheus look back?

"Orpheus and Eurydice" by Geogre Frederick Watts (oil on canvas)

A myth, a tragedy and
A retelling of tale as old

As you and I

Eurydice

in her
Mesmerizing, haunting beauty
Runs through a forest as dense as her
Hair
Flowing like a creek in a meadow
She bloomed like a flower
Only to be plucked
Right from where it
Grew it's first root

Orpheus

stands
Paralyzed, awestruck
As he saw her

Lying in grass, each blade enveloping her
Delicately
A love letter delivered to
His footsteps

Like a dog he chases her
Follows her
To depths of underworld
In the darkest, visceral
Corner of Hades' Kingdom
She sat sobbing
Tormented

Pleading, bargains
Hades agree to return
The most beautiful thing on Earth
But he must careful as to not
Catch a glimpse of her

Torn by Temptation
Escorts her to the upper realm

How could he not look at her

She exuded a warm light
Only seen when moon was
Softly, playfully hidden by clouds on
A cold night
Her skin as soft as
Dough, as white as the flour
Her hair
Oh! how could he not look at her hair
Flowing like a rhyme he only
Created after he saw her
Curls reaching her hips

The curves and curls merging

Solemnly he agrees

He took her by her hand
no light reached the depths of hell
Hastening their exit
Young as they met
Running towards their life

And soon

she fell
As the day she saw him for the first time
Albeit on the ground this time

Orpheus turns

Sees his maiden down
On the ground, bleeding wounded

She gasps
One breathe stops
Then the next, then the next
And finally the last one

With each one escaping her body

she murmured
"I forgive you"

Orpheus lost his music
All his symphonies returned to the underworld

Eurydice disintegrated with each note
As he plays his last song
For her

If looking back was a sin,
He was the first infidel

If looking back was a divine act
He was a messenger

He looked
Irrespective

He looked back

Love is either a sin or a devotion
Both equally annihilating
